Chaminade’s Interior Design Students Attend National Conference
Contributed by Leigha Oaks, ASID Student Member

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Hawaii Student Chapter has been brimming with fundraising events this past academic year. The students’ fundraising campaigns paid off as seven students were sent to Interiors 07, the ASID Conference on Design, in San Francisco, CA. This was the first year ASID Hawaii had student representation at the national conference…and it was MEMORABLE! The conference was educational and inspiring; the city was an exploration of historical design and entertainment.
Shelley Blaisdell, Darrah Cadiente, Brigit Donovan, Chloe Mora, Giselle Mora, Leigha Oaks, and Mary Ester Palumbo were among the students to enjoy Interiors 07. The ASID students attended a variety of seminars on Sustainability, Business, Practice, Specialty Designs, Career Basics, and Universal Design; they returned with resources and experiences to share with the entire campus.
Stitch, a community service project founded by several ASID Hawaii Student Members (Kyoko Matarai, Kanani Miura, and Leigha Oaks) was also featured at Interiors 07. Stitch is a program initiated to connect the design industry with the community. The founding students gathered textile swatches to incorporate into quilts to be donated to local homeless shelters and nursing homes. Stitch is still in its first semester, with plans to continue using the resources at their disposal to positively affect other members of society.
Chaminade’s first attendance at the Interiors Conference was a great success and aspiration. The Students are already making plans to attend Interiors 08 in New Orleans!
